Our patient Alexsander was born prematurely and spent the first three months of his life in the NICU. Alex was diagnosed as deaf and struggled with communication for much of his early life. When he was three years old, Alex received a cochlear implant and began to learn American Sign Language. At eight years old, he began receiving speech, occupational, and physical therapies from Aveanna. Now, Alex is in eighth grade and is considered trilingual in English, Spanish, and ASL.

Alex has come such a long way from his early struggles to communicate. While he still faces difficulties, he has made incredible progress over the years with the help of his speech therapy team and a little technology. When asked about his cochlear implant, Alex said, “I need it to hear. Without it, I cannot hear anyone. I would be sad without it.”

During the pandemic, Alex has continued his speech therapy sessions through teletherapy with Aveanna SLPA Carolina Castillo. Carolina is bilingual and provides specialized support on the unique aspects of learning English as a second (or third) language. According to Alex, his favorite part of speech therapy is “Ms. Carolina, and playing games with Ms. Carolina.”

Congratulations to Alex on all the amazing progress he has made. And thank you to Carolina for all the work she has done to support Alex in his speech journey. Keep up the great work!
