Motherhood rarely follows the path we imagine. It's full of unexpected challenges, joys, and new job descriptions. No one understands this better than moms of medically complex children, like Hnouci.
Hnouci's journey into motherhood was not easy. Her daughter, Abelia, was born with lissencephaly, gastroschisis, and a clubbed foot. As a first-time mother, Hnouci struggled to bond with Abelia in the NICU while navigating fear, uncertainty, and distance. Bringing Abelia home changed everything.
"When Abelia came home," Hnouci recalls, "it was the happiest moment of our lives." That day, Hnouci decided she would celebrate every one of Abelia's milestones and achievements, no matter how small.
"Every once in a while, a wave of sadness washes over me because I am grieving the life that I wished for her," Hnouci admits. "I wish she could run around with her brothers. I wish for sassy comments from her. I wish she could taste the cake we get for her every birthday. And it's all right to grieve. But there are also so many wonderful moments to celebrate. I choose to make the most of every moment."
Abelia is ten years old now and full of personality. Despite countless hospital visits, procedures, and setbacks over the years, she continues to shine with strength and a smile that lights up any room. "The best thing about being her mom is seeing her beautiful smile and celebrating all her accomplishments," Hnouci shares. "Seeing her happiness gives me immense joy."
Hnouci's motherhood journey took another unexpected turn in 2024, when she became a nurse. "After hearing about the possibility of becoming Abelia's nurse, I decided to go back to school," Hnouci says. "It is the best decision I ever made. After receiving my license, it felt unreal working as a nurse for Abelia. It is a blessing that I am able to do what I do. Aveanna supports me as a mom by enabling me to be Abelia's nurse."
As an Aveanna nurse, Hnouci balances her career with her calling as a mom. She puts her heart into all she does as a parents and clinician. This Mother's Day, we celebrate Hnouci and all mothers of medically fragile children who navigate the unexpected with incredible grace and love.
