Asher's Badges of Strength
Published Aug. 13, 2018

Asher is our latest patient superstar and boy, has he accomplished some amazing health milestones! Born on August 10, 2016, Asher had some complex medical challenges that left him needing repair to his intestinal perforation and a colostomy procedure at just three weeks old. He then underwent a colostomy reversal and appendectomy surgery when he was two months old. A few months after that, Asher endured two additional procedures when he had a G-button feeding tube and an external catheter placed. Asher is one tough patient superstar and he’s just turning two years old.

After all of the above surgeries and procedures, Asher had accumulated some significant scars – better known as badges of strength – on his little body. His physical therapist, Jamie Speidel PT, DPT, began using elastic therapeutic tape on Asher to help with scar remodeling in January 2018. “This not only improves the cosmetic appearance of the scar, but also the underlying adhesions that can interfere with functionality such as digestion, posture in sitting and standing, and ability to perform mobility such as rolling, crawling, and walking,” shares Physical Therapy Supervisor Ashley Morris, PT, DPT. “This therapeutic tape, also known as kinesiology tape, helps to soften scar tissue and reduce adhesions and pitting. It helps to make the scar soft, flat and pliable and ultimately reduces the risk of contractures. We used this specialized tape and technique to achieve optimal results for Asher and to reduce his risk of skin irritation.”

We are so happy for Asher and his health improvements. Asher has been with the Aveanna Healthcare family since May 2017 and he works with our physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, and private duty nursing team. Thanks for letting Aveanna be a part of your continued superstar successes, Asher!
