Tyler is a Clinical Supervisor with Aveanna's Private Duty Nursing team in Wexford, Pennsylvania. Although his healthcare journey has taken him through skilled nursing, hospice leadership, and nursing education, pediatric home care has always felt like where he's been meant to be. At Aveanna, he supports nurses, families, and patients while helping expand awareness for home healthcare to nurses and families alike.
What inspired you to pursue a career in home healthcare?
I graduated from nursing school in 2016 knowing that I wanted to work directly with people in their homes. After spending several years operating a business with my brother-in-law, the COVID-19 pandemic pulled me back into healthcare.
I knew there were families who needed support, and pediatric home healthcare felt like the right way for me to make an impact. I started as a field nurse caring for two pediatric patients, and that experience reaffirmed why I become a nurse in the first place.
What has your career journey looked like since then?
My path has given me the opportunity to experience several different areas of healthcare. I've worked in nursing education, supervision, wound care nursing, and in skilled nursing facilities. I've also served in leadership roles in hospice care.
Even with those experiences, I always felt a pull back to pediatric home healthcare. That's where I find the greatest satisfaction because of the relationships you build and the difference you can make in a family's daily life.
What makes pediatric home care so meaningful to you?
In home healthcare, you're not just seeing a patient for a short interaction. You're working with families over time and becoming a trusted part of their support system. With children especially, creating comfort and peace of mind for both the patient and their family is incredibly important.
One of the most rewarding parts of the job is seeing families regain opportunities that many people take for granted. Something as simple as going out to dinner, running errands, or spending time together outside the home can be life-changing when a family has consistent nursing support. Knowing we help make those moments possible is very special.
What would you tell nurses who are considering a career in home healthcare?
Home healthcare gives new grads and seasoned nurses unique opportunities to build meaningful relationships, gain hands-on clinical experience, and develop specialized skills. Whether you're interested in caring for patients with tracheostomies and ventilators or simply want to practice nursing in a more personal environment, home care offers experiences that are difficult to find elsewhere in healthcare.
I truly believe there isn't another area of healthcare that provides the same level of hands-on experience while also allowing you to see the direct impact you're making in someone's life every day.
