Caring at Home: A Guide to Colorado's Family Caregiver Programs
Published May 21, 2025

In Colorado, families caring for loved ones with medical needs don't have to do it alone or unpaid. Thanks to exciting state programs, family members can become paid caregivers, offering compassionate care at home while receiving professional support and compensation. Aveanna Healthcare has been a trusted partner of families in Colorado since 2003, helping them navigate and thrive in these family caregiver programs.

What Are Colorado's Family Caregiver Programs?

Colorado offers two primary Medicaid-supported programs that allow family members to be paid caregivers:

1. In-Home Support Services (IHSS)

IHSS is part of Colorado's Medicaid waiver system, including the Elderly, Blind, and Disabled (EBD), Complementary and Integrative Health (CIH), and Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waivers. Beginning July 1, 2025, this program will also be available to those not on specific waivers. IHSS allows eligible individuals to receive care in the comfort of their homes from someone they trust – often a family member.

Key Features:

  • Caregivers can assist with personal care, health maintenance, and homemaker services.
  • Certain eligible family members can be paid caregivers.
  • Care is directed by the patient, giving families more control and flexibility.

2. Family CNA Program

This unique program allows family member to become Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and get paid to care for their loved ones. It's ideal for parents of medically fragile children.

Key Features:

  • Aveanna helps family members become state-certified CNAs.
  • Once certified, caregivers are employed by Aveanna and receive ongoing training and support.
  • CNAs can provide more advanced care, including medical tasks under nurse supervision.
