"Parenting a special needs child grounds you and puts what really matters into focus. My bond with Rosetta might look different from other fathers and daughters. But she's taught me that love prevails no matter what we face."
Over the last two decades, Steve and his wife have navigated the ups and downs of parenthood with their four children, two of whom live with special needs. Their youngest daughter, Rosetta, has shown Steve the depth of a parent's love through every obstacle.
Rosetta lives with SCO1, an ultra-rare genetic condition that affects energy production and physical development. This rare disorder presents challenges with seizures and breathing, requiring 24/7 care and ongoing medical support. Rosetta and her family rely on private duty nursing services for stability, comfort, and peace of mind. Thanks to their Aveanna nurses, Steve can focus on what matters most: being Rosetta's dad.
"Having a medically complex child, care is obviously our top priority each day," said Steve. "Our Aveanna team has stood by our family through the ups and downs over the last 10 years. Although Rosie and I aren't able to communicate like other fathers and daughters, her care with Aveanna enables us to have a relationship outside the medical world."
From watching Rosetta's favorite shows to playing with her plush toys or simply pampering his "girlie girl" daughter, Steve knows the smallest moments often mean the most. He's come to cherish each moment with his daughter.
"Slowing down on a weekend and just spending time with Rosetta really puts everything in perspective for me," said Steve. "Having a special needs child, you really start to see clearly what matters in life. Through every obstacle and setback, our connection doesn't waver."
This Father's Day, Aveanna is proud to recognize Steve and other dads of medically fragile children whose love prevails over any challenges.
