Our Forever Nurse award is a special honor for those nurses who embody compassion, commitment, and care and have worked with the same patient for 10 years or more. Nurse Cassandra consistently goes above and beyond for her patient, who she has worked with for 14 years. We are so excited to celebrate her and recognize her service and sacrifice today!
Cassandra knew from the beginning of her nursing career that she wanted to work with patients one-on-one in their homes. After working as a home health aide through college, she became a private duty nurse after graduating. “Once I started, I never wanted to leave,” Cassandra says. “I wanted to provide one-on-one, focused care, with my full attention on my patient. You just don’t get to do that at the hospital.”
Cassandra never wavered in her career choice. And when she found her current patient, she never wavered in his care either. “I started with my patient when he was 10 years old,” Cassandra recalls. “Now he’s almost 24. I have been there for all his growth and every trial. He’s been there for me through a lot as well. In many ways, he’s like my first child. I will see him through as long as I have the privilege of caring for him.”
After 14 years together, Cassandra can pick up on the slightest change in her patient’s health, addressing any concerns quickly before they become bigger issues. His constant encourager and advocate, Cassandra has an incredible bond with her patient. “He is my priority,” Cassandra shares. “I want the best for him. That’s why I have the eyes to see what he needs. He deserves the best nurse, and that’s what I try to be for him.”
Cassandra certainly is the best nurse for her patient. We’re so proud of the care she provides, not only for her patient but for his whole family. “I care for my patient, support his family, educate his care team, and advocate for what he needs,” Cassandra explains. “I can do all of that because I know the full picture of his health like only a homecare nurse can.”
As a Forever Nurse, Cassandra has truly changed her patient’s life. And she says he has been just as impactful on hers. “He has grown me,” Cassandra shares. “Because of him, I am a more loving, patient, and compassionate person and mom. He centers and grounds me, no matter what may be happening in my life.”
