Inclusion Inspired: Alex's Journey
Published March 28, 2022

This Women’s History Month we’re celebrating some of the women who are making history right here at Aveanna! Today we are honored to introduce Alex Armijo, Contracts Manager. Alex is committed to being her authentic self, making her voice heard, and helping others do the same.

I am a proud queer, Mexican American, woman, 5th generation native Arizonan, leader, working mother, wife, sister, daughter, and friend.

I knew early on in life that I didn’t fit the profile of your typical leader and have been silenced at times because of it. That hasn’t stopped me from advocating for my voice to be heard. I pursued a seat at the table anyway because I wanted to challenge the status quo. The impact my identity has had on my life has inspired me to advocate for others who also deserve equitable representation in the workplace.

Inclusion means that we not only accept our differences, but we embrace them and actively seek to incorporate diverse viewpoints into our decision-making practices, our culture, and the vision we have for the future. When we are included and heard, especially those who have traditionally been marginalized in the workforce, we feel empowered and engaged, which, in turn, drives innovation and performance. By building a foundation from a rich kaleidoscope of perspectives and experiences, we become collectively stronger, we learn from one another, and ultimately, we build a greater sense of human connection and belonging.

The biggest challenge I face with acceptance is having the courage to speak up, knowing I could be undervalued because I am different from the typical decision makers. Fortunately, at Aveanna, I am confident in knowing that my voice is important and respected for the unique perspective I bring to the table.

Our patients and the caregivers who support them inspire me most of all because they face daily adversity with such admirable strength and courage. I know that the work we do at Aveanna to promote inclusivity, equitability, and accessibility broadens our capacity to meet and service our diverse patient needs.

Aveanna has been so welcoming to me and has embraced all the aspects that make me who I am. Since I’ve been here, I’ve been encouraged to show up as my authentic self at work, and hopefully I have inspired my fellow colleagues to do the same.
